Many patients wonder whether they should seek physiotherapy or osteopathy. Both disciplines treat pain and movement restrictions – but differ in their approach, training and areas of application.
What does a physiotherapist do?
Physiotherapists are state-certified professionals specialising in the restoration and maintenance of mobility. Their work includes:
Evidence-based treatment: Physiotherapy is built on scientifically proven methods. Every therapy is individually tailored to your diagnosis.
Wide range of treatments: From Manual Therapy and Bobath therapy to electrotherapy and lymphatic drainage.
Insurance coverage: Physiotherapy is covered by all public and private health insurance when prescribed by a doctor.
Rehabilitation: Particularly important after surgery, accidents or for chronic conditions such as back pain, arthritis or neurological conditions.
What does an osteopath do?
Osteopaths take a holistic approach and view the body as an interconnected unit:
Holistic approach: Osteopathy assumes that the structure and function of the body are inseparably connected. Disorders in one area can cause complaints in other areas.
Manual techniques: Osteopaths work exclusively with their hands. They detect tension, blockages and movement restrictions in the tissue.
Three sub-areas: Parietal (muscles, joints), visceral (internal organs) and craniosacral (skull, spine) osteopathy.
Cost coverage: Osteopathy is not a standard insurance benefit. Some health insurers subsidise treatment as part of bonus programmes.
Which therapy is right for me?
The choice depends on your complaints and goals. For specific injuries, after surgery or for medically prescribed rehabilitation, physiotherapy is usually the first choice. Osteopathy can be a useful complement, especially for unclear or chronic complaints.
